Conducive Environments

We come out to you for a free onsite termite barrier quote

There are a simple few that are a great starting point and you won't have to be an expert to point them out. So don't keep this just to yourself share this information with friends and family and save them a lot of hassles too!

Here are a few Conducive Environments around your house that can attract Termites

A garden against a house is an attractant for Termites.

1. Gardens up against the house is a big one. Not only are you providing Termites with a food source (dead branches, twigs, mulch) there's a good chance everything would be high in moisture and covering the slab edge and weep holes. We found a leaking pipe in this garden under the soil attached to that tap on the wall. Creating the perfect environment for Termites.

Water Sources.

hot water system leaking to ground can attract termites

2. Hot water system and Air conditioner overflow piping leaking to the ground. This is very easy to over look but the air conditioning unit will drop a fair amount of water into a concentrated spot. Termites are always on the search for a constant source of moisture. Also This gives Termites a water source and we often find termite activity in these areas . Older Hot Water Systems will slowly leak excess water onto the ground.

Stumps left in the ground can attract termites

3. Stumps and root crowns left in the ground. These are termite hotspots and are perfect for the main termite nest. Under the ground, away from predators and surrounded in moisture. Then If you cannot remove the crown from the soil then we recommend drill and injecting a termite treatment chemical like termidor into it to avoid possible infestation.

Timber Sleepers break down over time and can be a perfect place for a termite nest

(Bonus one) Timber Sleeper retain walls are like the hotel buffet. Sure they come out of the hardware store treated in a chemical to ward off termites but after months in the sun and rain this chemical soon breaks down. Hard up against the earth termites are quick to chow down and take advantage of the gift given to them.

Termite Barrier and Homes built on a slab

There is a misconception amongst home owners that houses built on slabs are not susceptible to termite attack. This could not be further from the truth. All it takes is a 2mm crack in the slab or one of the plumbing penetration to be not fitting correctly and you'll have termites in your house. Also we have conducted Building and Pest Inspections where termites have come up through the slab and started to eat the soft pine around the edging of the carpet, leaving just the small carpet nails and brittle sleeves of pine.

Water leak to plumbing is a massive attractant

Here is a leaking water pipe that was feeding a tap above it. Found during an installation of a Termite Barrier. The soil is completely saturated and it looked as if it had been leaking for some time. An Over-sized hole through the brick work would allow direct access for Termites into the house. So Being below the soil line, in a garden and with a water source - it's pretty much as bad as it gets in regards to a conducive environment. The pipe connector was replaced with a new one and the saturated soil was removed.

Newer Slab Built Homes

termite barrier

Newer homes on a concrete slab from 1995 would have a physical moisture/termite blanket (physical termite barrier system) installed to stop termites coming up through any cracking. While adding some protection, all it actually does is push termites to the slab edge. This is why it's extremely important to have annual Termite Inspections so we can pick up on this termite mudding on the side of the house. From the slab edge the termites will then tunnel through the garden until reaching your covered weep holes and then gain access into the house.

But It's not all doom and gloom though, Certified Home Inspection can easily show you how to lower your Termite Risk Factor.

The three stages of a Chemical Termite Management System (Termite Barriers brisbane) Install.

What type of Termite Barriers are there?

Termite Bait Stations Barrier (Termite Baiting)

Firstly The In Ground baiting stations are installed around the house approximately every 3 metres. You Then fill the stations with sleeves of eucalyptus timbers which termites show more favour towards. You Monitor the termite barrier stations every 4 to 6 weeks by a trained technician looking for termite activity. If and when Termites are found.  You add a Bait to the stations and this starts the culling process of termites taking the bait back to the colony. The low toxic bait breaks down the termites exoskeleton and they simply perish. Around your home The Termite barrier Bait Stations are installed in concrete and earth (garden and lawn). The units are roughly 20 cm high and 10cm wide and sit neatly inline with the garden soil, lawn or concrete. You must install the stations at no more than 3 meters apart. This is the interception zone.

PROTECTION that is less toxic than salt

termite barrier

This eco-friendly Termite Bait uses a termite bait containing less than ¼ of a gram of an active ingredient. Also this ingredient is less toxic than table salt. The active ingredient has a I.G.R ( insect growth regulator) which inhibits chitin to grow which stops the termite growing its outer shell back. Without their outer shell the termites dehydrate and the colony breaks down. The actives are Hexaflumuron (Sentricon termite barrier Baiting System) and Chlorfluazuron (Exterra termite barrier Baiting system)

Chemical Termite Barrier (Chemical Barrier)

This style is a little more invasive. As you have to dig down to below the top of the footing of the house. The normal dirt is dug away. and (depending on it's condition) replaced with soil which has been treated with a chemical. Additionally It's important to note that there are two main chemical characteristics available for this termite barrier system. One is a Termite Repellent and the other is a Termite Chemical that is undetectable and has a transfer effect.

Also We only use a chemical called Termidor which in our opinion is the best money can buy and will not only kill termites but will possibly be taken back to the colony (For more information on Termidor barrier have a look at our Termite Treatment page),Furthermore We are not interested in simply repelling termites away only for them to take up somewhere else on your property. See here for the correct way to install a termite barrier

Chemical Reticulation system

Another Installation of a chemical termite barrier is a reticulation system. Also Very similar to the idea of garden irrigation. A chemical grade plastic pipe is dug in below the top of the footings of the house. You can lay Up to 12 meters of Pipe. The idea behind this method is all chemicals have an active timeframe. In fact The average is 8 years. Furthermore With your reticulation system, the barrier is reactivated by simply pumping more chemical into the piping surrounding your house. Your costs will be reduced as the labour content has been eliminated.

In fact We have the experience and knowledge to create complete termite systems. And the best pesticide to combat subterranean termites.
